Is this background remover really free?
Yes. There is no charge, no credit system, no sign-up, and no watermark. Because the model runs on your own device rather than on our servers, there is no per-image cost to pass on to you. You can remove backgrounds from as many images as you like.
Do my images get uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model is downloaded into your browser and runs there using your device's GPU or CPU. Your image is read from your disk into browser memory and never sent over the network. The only exceptions are the Animate and Image Edit buttons, which have to upload the finished composition so the video generator or image editor can use it — and that only happens when you choose to.
What's the difference between Quick and HD cutout?
Quick uses MODNet, a small 7 MB model tuned specifically for people. It loads fast and works well on phones, but it struggles with anything that isn't a person. HD uses RMBG-1.4, a 44 MB general-purpose model that handles products, animals and objects, and does noticeably better on fine detail like hair. Start with Quick for portraits and switch to HD if the edges aren't clean enough.
When should I use Interactive or Manual refine?
Use it when the automatic modes get it wrong — typically when several people or objects overlap and you only want one of them, or when the subject blends into the background. On a computer you click on the subject to select it, then switch to Background and click on anything that shouldn’t be there; each click updates the result in a fraction of a second. On a phone or tablet you get a brush instead: paint over the background to remove it, and switch to Foreground to paint the subject back in.
Why is the first cutout slow?
The first time you use a mode, your browser downloads that model — 7 MB for Quick, 44 MB for HD, 14 MB for Interactive. That’s a one-time cost: the model is stored in your browser’s cache, so every later cutout starts immediately, even after you close and reopen the page. Manual refine is a plain brush and downloads nothing at all. If you’re on mobile data you may want to wait for Wi-Fi the first time.
What image formats and sizes are supported?
JPG, PNG and WebP, up to 20 MB per file. Very large photos are scaled down internally for the AI step to keep memory use reasonable, but the transparent PNG you download is produced at your original image's resolution, not at the reduced size used for analysis.
What resolution is the downloaded image?
The transparent PNG matches your source image's resolution, cropped to the subject's bounding box so there's no wasted empty border. The composed JPG is exported at your background image's native resolution, so adding a large background gives you a large final image.
What does the Animate button do?
It takes the picture you just composed and hands it to our Image to Video generator as the starting frame, so you can turn a still composition into a short clip. Animate and Image Edit are the only steps that upload your image, because video generation and AI image editing run on a server rather than in your browser.
